THE ANNIE OGDEN SERIES by Frederick Brooke

Zombie Candy

Annie Ogden Mystery 2

By Frederick Brooke
ZOMBIE CANDY IS DELICIOUSLY FUNNY!

The story takes the reader from suburban Chicago to a quaint village in Italy. This second book in the Annie Ogden Mystery series, is a deliciously funny and refreshing tale of a man's obsession with sex and zombies.

After serving in the Iraq war, Annie returns home and decides to become a private investigator. We meet Annie's best friend and college roommate, Candace. Candace's philandering husband, Larry, is obsessed with zombies and other women. Annie takes more than a professional interest in her first investigation, thinking of creative ways to seek revenge for her best friend. Annie, along with her new partner, Salvatore, decide to take the PI work a step further and throw Larry a few curves. Candace takes their idea to the extreme and incorporates the PI team in a colorful and elaborate scheme to teach Larry a lesson that he'll never forget.

Although this book is part of a series, the author does a wonderful job of introducing Annie a second time. Annie's adventures always leave me feeling energized and happy. So, if you missed reading "Doing Max Vinyl", indulge in the delightful pleasure of falling in love with Annie and her zany friends in "Zombie Candy."

DOING MAX VINYL
AN ANNIE OGDEN MYSTERY

By Frederick Lee Brooke
Annie Ogden Targets Max Vinyl

Annie Ogden feels at loose ends after three military tours in Iraq. Her sister's mishap with a GPS and her brother-in-law's missing cell phone collection feed Annie's compulsive desire to follow a moving target. Annie's target is Max Vinyl.

Max Vinyl is an ordinary sleaze who aspires to be a respected businessman in a successful relationship. The day Max sells eighty percent of his shady recycling business to Korean businessmen is the best and worst day of his life. With three million dollars, Max can help his aging uncle pay for his aunt's medical care. He can take the plunge into a more serious relationship with his current girlfriend. Max's love life turns sour when his environmentalist girlfriend blackmails him. Max's business explodes in his face when his employees lose a GPS and computer data belonging to a prestigious accounting firm.

Max runs his business fast and hard like his seven expensive sports cars. His crew consists of an eclectic group of ex-cons who get the job done, in a roundabout way. The fast quips and capers of ex-cons, Ike and Tranny, are hilarious. Entertaining characters and slapstick comedy make this Annie Ogden mystery a fun read. Watch Max's life spiral downward as his business and his women get out of hand.

Journeys Across Niagara: The Flute, the Feather, and the Drum

By D. K. Levick

A few months ago, I read a lovely tale of five young men who embark on an ambitious expedition across Niagara Falls in the 1960's. Since then, "Bridges: A tale of the Niagara" by D. K. Levick, has been revised and renamed, "Journeys Across Niagara: The Flute, the Feather, and the Drum."

By either name, this well-written, moving story is told from native experience and from the heart. I especially enjoyed the Historical facts about the early settlers, the native Indian tribes, and the folklore surrounding the life of The Hermit of Niagara. The imagery of Niagara; the river, the falls, the tunnels, the caves and the bridges are so vivid that the reader can almost feel a brush of cold spray from the falls.

This is an adventurous tale of five young lads in the 1960's who bite off more adventure than they can chew. I was totally there with the boys - climbing, slipping, and sliding my way through. The voices of Kevin, Chuck, Billy, Wayne, and Lennie spoke to me in strong, clear tones that are embedded in my mind and will never leave me. The author uses the characters' ethnicity and curiosity to weave rich historical tales that create stories within the story. This book feels like a treasured gift presented by someone who has experienced Niagara to its fullest. It's a bumpy ride that all ages will enjoy!

DREAMS AND NIGHTMARES

By Ann Werner

A Unique, Colorful, Action-Packed Thriller

This is a cleverly written tale of a writer’s ultimate dream and a villain’s ultimate nightmare. The story follows the lives of two people living in opposite worlds in Northern California. The reader follows the aspirations and fresh success of young protagonist, Decker Jones, as she purchases a coastal dream home in Northern California. Meanwhile, we are introduced to the dark underworld of Albert Crawford, a convicted bank robber and murderer. The author paints a stimulating, hair-raising picture of prison life and the depravity that lurks in the mind of a desperate criminal in a California penitentiary. Crawford’s conniving schemes and evil deeds seem to jump from the page straight into the mind’s eye. Crawford’s wickedness is closely matched by his mate, Ruby, who follows him blindly until her own self-interest takes priority over her professed love for Crawford.

When Decker’s dreams turn to nightmares, she prevails so triumphantly that you’ll want to cheer her on and shout for joy. DREAMS AND NIGHTMARES is a unique, colorful, action-packed thriller that left me with the elated feeling I get at the end of a great movie.

DOWN IN TOWN
A Short Story by Jimelle Salyers

Take a walk with Dahlia, a disenchanted, thirty-something writer stuck in a small town. Along the way, we meet her old classmates and colorful townspeople, young and old. The landscape and characters of Main Street shine through sharply and clearly. Dahlia's frustration takes an usual turn at the end of the story that would make a great opening to a delightful series.

This is the first work I've read by this novelist. I love the gentle and personal way the story is written. I look forward to hearing more from characters like Dahlia.

A Superb...Mesmerizing Short Story

Gabriella West brings superb characterization to a mesmerizing short story that steps beyond the boundary of the average love story into the secret realm of an older man’s lost dreams.

LUCY STANDS ON HER PRINCIPAL
By B. Z. Hercules

I LOVE LUCY, TOO! A TRULY FUN READ!

I laughed my way through this story as young teacher, Lucy Stone, is pushed through the bureaucratic channels of the education system, into the arms of the wrong man, and winds up in the worst middle school in the district. The reader rides along with her as she shares the day-to-day frustration of the survival of a nerd in a system that constantly beats her down. From the belligerent student to the teacher’s pet, from the sleazy principal to the principal from hell, from the backstabbing friend to the unexpected friend, this is a laugh out loud story that quickly turns into a stimulating murder mystery.
When Lucy gets caught up in a murder case, she’s convinced that nothing in life ever goes her way. Her personal and professional life take a twist when she changes her image and learns to stand up for herself. This story is truly a fun read, full of truth and consequences where everyone gets what they deserve in the end. I look forward to future delightful adventures with Lucy.
